Apps have changed the way that we all think and feel about the world around us – but how did it all start? Like any good story, the App has a fantastic beginning. The infographic above explains key parts of the journey such as;
- From the very first entry into the app world via Simon, the IBM creation in 1993, the destination towards smartphones was already being set and worked towards – its use of basic apps like calendars and notepads made it a hugely useful gadget at the time
- Next in line was to be the BlackBerry, when it arrived in 2002. It had phone functionality and a variety of the key features and skills that eventually became the first of the mass-market smartphones that were designed for things like e-mail
- Things stayed rather tame until 2007 & 2008, when Apple took control. They released the first iPhone which came with the default apps like text, photos, maps and weather all included. Then, in 2008, they launched the App Store, as well as the iPhone 3G which revolutionized apps and turned it into the thriving industry we know it as
- In October 2008, just a few months on, the Android market was launched by Google as a countermeasure to try and stop Apple from commanding the entire market – the HTC dream also arrived, and was the first commercial Android smartphone that was available
- In 2009, huge numbers of apps were to be found on the Apple store; in just under a year, more than one billion downloads had been made!
- Milestones have followed suit with the release of iPad heralding a new era of apps designed for larger platforms. The Android marketplace matched the Apple store in 2010 for having 1b downloads and heralded the increase in different kinds of apps that would soon be on the marketplace
- By 2011, app downloads were as high as 10b, and apps overtook smartphone usage times in comparison to using the web; apps were now the most popular thing to do on a mobile platform with roughly 72 minutes spent per day using online apps
- By 2016, it’s expected that more than 44 billion app downloads will have been reached, and app-to-person messaging will most likely have overtaken text messaging as the main way of communicating with a smartphone
- Branded applications are going to become even more important, as the right branded app will provide users with information and help them establish a connection with businesses’ and brands that they trust
- Tablet users tend to use the web on their devices more at home, whilst a smartphone user will prefer to do so on the go thanks to the easier portability of a smartphone versus a tablet
